The Mayors’ Congress provided an opportunity for Vadym Boychenko, Mayor of Mariupol, and Édouard Philippe, Mayor of Le Havre, to meet again and exchange ideas.
Le Havre and Mariupol share similarities as two port and industrial cities that have endured significant destruction during major wars. While Le Havre successfully rebuilt itself after World War II, Mariupol remains under Russian occupation today, with its residents enduring dire conditions.
Despite this, Mariupol’s mayor, with support and expertise from Le Havre and other European cities, is already preparing for the city’s reconstruction post-liberation, aiming for swift rebuilding based on the highest standards of sustainable development.
During their meeting, the two mayors discussed the plight of residents living under Russian occupation and the conditions necessary to achieve a just and lasting peace.
They also explored concrete initiatives, such as professional training for Mariupol apprentices, the upcoming opening of La Cantine de Marioupol in Dnipro, and the development of cultural projects between Le Havre and Mariupol.
