As the war continues to impact Ukraine, bridges of solidarity are being built across nations. This summer, a group of 12 children from Chernihiv, a city heavily affected by the conflict, had the opportunity to visit France and Germany. This initiative is part of a city partnership program designed to offer young Ukrainians a temporary respite and create cherished memories far from the horrors of war.

Under the leadership of Mayor Mathieu Hanotin, Saint-Denis played a pivotal role in organizing the children’s trip, which included a visit from Chernihiv’s Mayor, Oleksandr Lomako. The city of Saint-Denis has also committed to hosting a group of Ukrainian children every year.

The visit began with a stay in Saint-Hilaire, Vendée, at the Saint-Denis municipal holiday center, where the children experienced the beauty of the sea and a true moment of disconnection.

The group then traveled to Gera, Germany, Saint-Denis’ twin city, where they enjoyed cultural site tours and engaging in sports activities.

This initiative is part of broader efforts to support Ukrainian communities, particularly through the development of partnerships between French and Ukrainian cities. These exchanges not only provide humanitarian aid but also foster lasting ties that will continue to offer support long after the war ends.
