A journey fraught with obstacles.
“The Ukrainian Flame” takes us into the daily lives of these athletes, who continue to train relentlessly under unimaginable conditions caused by the war. Amid Russian bombings, air raid alerts, widespread power outages, and the constant need to take shelter in bunkers, these young champions persist in their preparation, driven by the hope of realizing their Olympic dream.
Volodymyr, Marya, Alina, and Iryna are between 20 and 30 years old. They are Ukrainian champions in gymnastics, fencing, athletics, wrestling, or kayaking. Shattered by two years of war, their lives have been plunged into horror, and their Olympic aspirations derailed by human madness.
Volodymyr lost a leg on the front line and is now attempting to qualify for the Paris Paralympics. Marya’s father is on the front line and hasn’t returned for months. Alina lives in constant fear of the bombs that strike her hometown of Mykolaiv daily. Iryna struggles with depression after enduring unspeakable horrors in Irpin at the start of the war.
