The French National Assembly has adopted a historic resolution by an overwhelming majority (303 to 1) condemning Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and calling on France to strengthen its assistance. This resolution is a significant victory for both France and Ukraine!
What does this resolution demand?
The resolution:
- Calls for the restoration of Ukraine’s territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders, including Crimea and the city of Sevastopol, illegally occupied by Russia since 2014.
- Urges the French Government and the European Union to support Ukraine economically and militarily until the end of Russian aggression.
- Calls on France to enhance humanitarian aid and improve the care of Ukrainian refugees.
- Supports the International Criminal Court (ICC) in its investigations to ensure that Russian war crimes and crimes against humanity are prosecuted by the ICC or a special tribunal.
- Encourages EU member states to contribute to the EU Civil Protection Mechanism and establish corridors to facilitate Ukrainian exports, particularly grain.
- Welcomes France’s creation of a €100 million fund for the Ukrainian military and calls on the Government to enhance military deliveries in coordination with European partners.
- Supports additional financial aid to Ukraine to help the Ukrainian state cope with the consequences of the war and fulfill essential functions.
This resolution aligns with the key points of our Charter of Support for Ukraine, proposed to candidates for signature last spring and endorsed by dozens of deputies. These points include financial, military, and humanitarian support, an embargo on Russian energy, Ukraine’s accession to the European Union, and holding Russia accountable for its crimes.
Stand With Ukraine is proud to see these priorities embraced and reaffirmed by the French Parliament, whose attention and commitment to the Ukrainian cause we commend! Our association especially thanks deputies Pieyre-Alexandre Anglade, Aurore Bergé, and Benjamin Haddad, who fought for this resolution. However, we regret that this support for Ukraine and democracy was not shared by all groups in the Assembly.
Finally, our next goal will be to push for the National Assembly, following the example of the European Parliament and several other legislatures, to recognize Russia as a terrorist state and the Wagner mercenaries as a terrorist organization.
