On February 28, at the Théâtre de la Ville du Havre, the Friendship Day between Le Havre and Mariupol concluded with a profoundly moving event: the concert of the “Renaissance” Chamber Orchestra of Mariupol.
This was more than just a musical performance. It was a powerful affirmation of Ukrainian culture and a symbol of renewal. Mariupol—a martyred city, but also a city of the future—continues to exist through its artists, its citizens, and those in exile. The “Renaissance” Orchestra is one of the most powerful testaments to this enduring spirit.
After 2022, when Mariupol was brutally occupied by Russia, its musicians were forced to flee—but they never stopped playing and carrying their art forward. Thanks to their determination and the support of many partners, they found a new home in Kyiv and continue their mission in Ukraine and beyond.
Le Havre, a city that has experienced destruction and reconstruction, has committed to a partnership with Mariupol, sealed by the signing of the Friendship Protocol between the two cities. The orchestra’s performance in Le Havre within this framework sends a powerful message: just as Le Havre rose again, Mariupol will be reborn. And that rebirth begins today—through culture, solidarity, and the concrete commitments made between these two cities.
We express our deepest admiration to the 17 musicians of the orchestra, their conductor Vasyl Kryatchok, and to all those who work tirelessly to ensure that Ukraine’s voice continues to resonate throughout the world.
Stand With Ukraine is proud to have contributed to organizing the orchestra’s tour in France and to see these musicians bring Mariupol’s voice to European stages.
Long live Mariupol, long live Le Havre, long live renewal.
